5 out of 5 stars A great alternative where FM reception is marginal   July 23, 2010

My favorite FM radio station changed their transmitter resulting in unacceptably weak reception for me even with a roof antenna. I saw other reviews of this receiver stating that it had good sensitivity. My reception went from marginally unacceptabe to vertually perfect. In additon, the sound quality was better than I had ever received before on FM. There is no provision to go back to analog reception once it switches to HD. I am not sure if this is an advantage or disadvantage. My only gripe about this unit is that the background light on the display stays on all the time, making it inapproperiate for bedroom use.

I knew next to nothing about HD radio but my favorite radio station was bought out and the new owners completely changed the format. We had this radio station on nearly exclusively for several decades. A NPR radio station took over the format in HD, so I was compelled. I ordered the Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner hoping for the best. It was very easy to set up, I found my NPR station quite quickly, and the reception is excellent with just the included FM antenna and I am twenty five miles from the station. I have been quite pleased with the NPR station and equally pleased thus far with the Sony HD tuner. The price of entry was also quite reasonable.

Although I read the reviews here before buying, I was still surprised by just how small and light is this Sony HD tuner, which encourages portability. I've used it in the living room, kitchen and bedroom, connected to my Onkyo system and two boom boxes -- a $500 Panasonic and a $50 no-name. In each case, the sound is terrific. The Sony's sensitivity and selectivity is much better than the Onky and Pana units and I find the analog RCA outputs deliver fine sound through any amplifier. Since I use the tuner on a table/counter/nightstand rather than a shelf, the control buttons on top work great for me.

I live close-in to DC, so I get excellent reception of the HD channels I like from NPR and C-span radio. In addition, I've discovered a number of new stations scattered around Maryland and Virginia in a 50-75 mile radius whose analog signals come in well enough to be listenable.

Others have complained about the bright dial backlight of this unit. There are three settings for this and at the dimmest the light didn't bother me in the bedroom. As another aside, I'll mention that I've always disliked the FM ribbon antennas equipment makers provide, so I tried connecting the Sony to an old TV rabbit ears antenna and found the reception to be excellent. The "ears" also compliment the portability of the tuner.

If you listen to radio for more than background noise, you'll enjoy this tuner. The ease of movement and connection to any type of sound system, together with its superior performance and cheap price make the Sony XDRF1HD a winner.

A compact HD radio to add to an existing stereo system. Excellent sound; won't break your budget

4 out of 5 stars Sony HD tuner   June 28, 2010

This tuner does exactly what I expected -- adds choices of stations to listen to, some without any commercials. Sound quality is excellent. Set up only took minutes. The display of information on the music currently on air is useful, but scrolls a bit too slowly.
