3 out of 5 stars It was not a complete unit.   July 16, 2010
    Bender
Amazon did not include a car charger with my unit. It is advertised as coming with the car charger. I went to cingular and bought the usb 12-24 volt car charger that is the same as the tom tom one. Recently my girlfriend was using the go 730 on a business trip and on the second day of the trip when she started up her car the device started smoking so she unplugged it and now it doesn't work anymore. I was lucky enough to be within 6 days of the six month warranty so they are going to send me another unit. However I had told the second guy at TOMTOM that I was using an after market car charger and he said that would void the warranty. Luckily that wasn't his call.

    3 out of 5 stars Didn't meet my expectations   June 28, 2010

I am satisfied with the product but its not what I actually expected. The feature 'lane guidance' is okay but i have never seen any images of lanes and intersections while driving in the freeways from newyork to maryland. Furthermore, it doesnt connect to the internet via my phone 'LG EnvTouch' with varizon subscription making it impossble to get traffic updates.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD UNIT BUY NEW AND NOT REFURBISHED   June 26, 2010

Let me just say that I have never owned a GPS. This is my first one. I own an iPhone and that is plenty for my needs when I travel.

I purchased the Tom Tom 730 refurbished for my wife and daughter. They needed this to get used to the traffic around DFW metro area (we live 180 miles from there).

I paid $130 for a refurbished unit in Amazon.

    Pros:

All the GPS functions work, the advanced lane guidance was one of the things I was looking for and I could not find this in Garmin unless I spent over $200. It is very nice to be told 2 miles in advance which lane you should be in specially in the DFW Metroplex.

My daughter makes very good user of the bluetooth functions. Once the GPS was paired with her phone (A Samsung Impression), the GPS took the task of synchronizing her contact list automatically. She was immediately able to make and receive calls from the GPS. Hands free calling for teenagers (or anyone) is a great feature. The speakerphone is fair and fair only. But when you consider any basic car bluetooth speakerphone could cost around $50. The feature is a plus well worth it. The GPS comes with a very extensive list of phones that are compatible. I suspect you could find it in Tom Tom's website.

The screen is of very good size. The visibility is decent, more advanced users can tell whether the glare is excessive or not when compared to other units to me it is OK even during daytime but you have to position it properly. The sound could be louder. My daughter drives a Honda Civic which has plenty of road noise. I suspect the 730 would be just fine in a minivan, sedan etc..

    Cons:

I mentioned the day I bought this unit I paid $130. The brand new unit cost was $200. So refurbished and $70 savings, I said let's do it.

The refurbished GPS did not have an option to refresh to the latest maps. It said it was expired and there had been as many as 9 quarterly changes since the map edition in my unit. So there you have it I have maps from the beginning of 2008 in a unit purchased in June of 2010.

As many people has mentioned this fact alone is ludicrous. It is not properly advertised and I would go so far as to say it is flat out deceiving.

When I faced this I started reading the other reviews and I found out that this is a hit or miss situation. Many people has gotten lucky many have not. the few people mentioned this is a lost cause since Tom Tom has a policy of not updating maps in refurbished units.

Certainly I had the option of updating my maps at a cost, yes you can imagine how much, a whopping $70 dollars!! So I felt totally duped buying the refurbished version.

Even worse, 2 weeks after I purchased the GPS, Amazon started selling the new units for $150. Talk about bad timing.

I will explore if there is any option to update these maps either thru Amazon or Tom Tom but I am not too optimistic.

I am not paying $70 dollars to Tom Tom.

I like the unit, but I don't really feel it is not properly advertised. I feel that Amazon let me down on this one (I have been a loyal customer for over 7 years buying most of my books and several electronics from them).

My recommendation again, this is a great GPS for the features but if you decide to buy it, DON'T GET THE REFURBISHED VERSION!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not all that is promised is delivered   June 26, 2010
    birdcrazed (Bangor, ME United States)
My girlfriend is wary of buying online so we ordered this together for me before Christmas 2009 direct from Amazon, LLC. There was a $[...] rebate offer at the time, which we never received. The initial free map update from Tom Tom was not allowed as the device was read as having the most current maps. The maps are at least three years old, from the fact that several older local road changes are not reflected in my 730.
The Correct map function does not correct on a well-known One-Way street in Augusta, Maine, though I have attempted to correct twice. Trip planning for the quickest arrival is not accurate. I can get to Montreal following a route from a paper map in 5 hours 15 min, following Tom Tom 730 instructions the trip takes close to 6 hours non-stop.
I am concerned with updating because of reports of permanent device crashes when attempting to update. I suppose I will simply put up with it.

1 out of 5 stars Touchscreen Paperweight   June 20, 2010
    Carlos Eduardo Acosar (Northern VA)
    Ladies and Gentlemen;

I'll be plain. This isn't an actual review. No one knows how long it will be before I have a functioning unit on which to comment.

    !!!!!!! THIS IS A WARNING !!!!!!!

IF YOU PURCHASE A REFURBISHED UNIT WHOSE INSTALLED MAP IS OUTSIDE OF THE UPDATE WARRANTY, THEN THE MOMENT YOU HOOK IT UP TO YOUR COMPUTER, AND ALLOW IT TO AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE, YOU HAVE JUST CREATED A TOMTOM BRICK.

And apparently, there is no way for the new user to know what their status is, until it is too late. At that point, when you turn your system on, it will tell you that YOU HAVE NO INSTALLED MAPS. It had a map when you took it out of the box and turned it on, but the moment you attempt to update it, your map will cease to function if it is outside of it's update period.

Let's be clear. I have no problem with TomTom providing map updates as a service. It is common practice. And, the updates are reasonably priced (especially when compared to OEM in-dash units). However, where TomTom scores a big flaming F for FAILURE is in the full disclosure department. I've paid a fair price for the unit; ALL additional costs should be fully disclosed.

I purchased this unit days before my wife was to leave for a trip. I didn't want her to be wandering around in an unfamiliar city. After we hooked the unit up to the pc and ran TomTom Home, the system asked to be updated. There was no warning that this process could result in loss of access to your maps and render the device useless. And to make matters worse, when we discovered this, there was no explanation as to the cause. We wasted additional time researching and troubleshooting, eventually figuring out that this behavior is to be expected if you have not purchased map updates. Finally, after determining the cause, I spend an additional 39.98 to purchase the update. Only to find out that access to the map already installed on the system is not available immediately, but only after they have process my payment/order. So, now I have a brick instead of a GPS system for want of an activation code. Again, all of this frustration could have been avoided if only full disclosure was made of the additional steps potentially required to make a refurbished unit functional. I realize that not all refurbs will have this problem, BUT WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADEQUATELY WARNED. I gladly would have paid the 39.98 up front as part of the purchase price to have this done at whatever depot handles the refurb. I was so angry and frustrated, for the first time as an adult user, I considered a search of warez and crack sites. This is no way to introduce customers to your brand.
