The nüvi 855 offers full coverage mapping for the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The preloaded map data features nearly six million points of interest, including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs and attractions. The map data is provided by NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

Simply speaking, nüvi 855 is one advanced navigator. It features voice-activated navigation, a widescreen display, preloaded maps, an FM transmitter and more. Like the rest of the wide nüvi 800-series, just speak a menu option and nüvi obeys your command.

Speak Commands
nüvi 855 not only tells you where to turn but listens to your spoken commands. With nüvi's innovative speech recognition, you safely control nüvi's interface with your voice--allowing you to keep both hands on the wheel. Simply press the button on the remote (which attaches to the steering wheel) to activate speech recognition and begin speaking menu options. nüvi even recognizes shortcut phrases for popular functions. Tell nüvi "Find Address" and speak an address to start navigating.

With nüvi 855's widescreen display, you'll always get the big picture. View map detail, driving directions, photos and more in bright, brilliant color. Its sunlight-readable, 4.3-inch display is easy to read--from any direction.

Know the Lane Before It's Too Late
nüvi 855 takes navigation to the next level with lane assist. No more guessing which lane you need to be in to make an upcoming turn. Lane assist guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate. It realistically displays road signs and junctions on your route along with arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation.

And with the 3D Lane Assist Junction View, you'll be able to see a photo-realistic screen that shows you both the road detail as well as the signs as you will see them on the road. The signs that aren't needed for navigation are faded compared to the appropriate lane signage.

Navigate With Ease
nüvi 855 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps and millions of points of interest (POIs) such as hotels, restaurants, fuel stations, ATMs and more. Speak a menu option or touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2-D or 3-D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. It even announces the name of exits and streets so you never have to take your eyes off the road. In addition, nüvi 855 accepts custom points of interest, such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.

Where am I?
Keep track of yourself and your car with nüvi 855. Just speak or tap "Where Am I?" to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. nüvi 855 even remembers where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots such as amusement parks, stadiums and malls.

With the POI loader program users can set up proximity alerts for school zones, safety cameras, create custom POIs and more. Click to enlarge

A handy MP3 player lets you play songs stored on SD memory cards.

Plan Ahead
nüvi 855 includes advanced navigational features to take the worry out of traveling. With route planning you can save 10 routes, specify via points and preview simulated turns on the 855's wide screen. In addition, nüvi 855 automatically sorts multiple destinations to provide an efficient route for errands, deliveries or sales calls. It also displays speed limits for highways and Interstates. A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

Take It With You
nüvi 855's high-sensitivity internal (non flip-up) antenna gives it a sleeker, thinner design than the nüvi 600-series, making it easy to slip in your pocket or purse. Its rechargeable lithium-ion battery makes it convenient for navigation by car or on foot.

Go Beyond Navigation
Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 855 includes many "must have" entertainment and travel tools including MP3 player, audio book player (subscription to Audible.com required), JPEG picture viewer, currency converters, Garmin Games, alarm clock and more. With the included wireless FM transmitter, you can hear audio, including voice prompts, MP3s and audio books, through your vehicle's stereo. It's also compatible with optional FM traffic alerts or optional MSN Direct content. With photo navigation, you can download Google Panoramio pictures via our Garmin Connect Photos website and navigate to them. The 855 features Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and is compatible with our free Garmin Garage where you can download custom vehicles that show your location on the map. Enhance your travel experience with optional plug-in microSD cards such as Garmin Travel Guides for detailed data on attractions.

3 out of 5 stars Navigator   July 26, 2010
Steve Baker
Sometimes, it gives confusing directions, especially when I just exited from a highway. It seems like this device thinks I am still on the highway.

4 out of 5 stars HUSBAND NOT LOST AGAIN   July 26, 2010
Nancy Keene
GOT THIS FOR MY HUSBAND WHO IS ALWAYS LOST WHEREVER HE GOES. FOUND THIS TO BE VERY HELPFUL AND WILL USE IT ALL THE TIME.

4 out of 5 stars Basic functions seem OK with some issues   July 25, 2010
W. Ivey (Austin, TX USA)
So far I've used it around town, and one trip (~100 miles) out and back. It's gotten me where I wanted to go and, in one case, did it better than Google maps (the 855 wouldn't accept the slightly bogus address I got from a website, whereas Google maps tried to find it and missed by seven miles; with the corrected address the Nuvi took me right there).

My previous GPS was a cheap (at the time) Mio C310x which still has the smoothest operation of any I've seen, even if it wasn't feature rich. (If I could get map updates for it I'd still be using it I think.) The voice prompts on the Mio anticipated turns - by the time it finished saying "Turn left in 30 yards" you were at the 30 yard mark. The Nuvi, though, seems to start announcing the turn as, for example, 100 feet ahead after you pass the 100 ft mark so you have less warning. Not a big issue, but I've had to learn to anticipate what it is going to tell me a bit and pay attention to the earlier prompts from further out. (It also seems to measure from the physical center of the intersection so you may be initiating a turn with 30 feet or so still showing on the display. There again, the Mio was friendlier by measuring from approximately the start of the turn as far as I could tell.)

As others have pointed out, this unit is not always stable - that seems to be a problem with a lot of Garmin's line. So far it has rebooted once while calculating a route to an intersection, and froze at 90% while calculating a trip to an address (I restarted it by holding the power switch as the manual suggests). Since I haven't used it that many times, this is about a 20% failure rate. Neither of these routes were very complicated but, even so, it acted like the software was overflowing or getting caught in an endless loop. (To give it the benefit of the doubt, in the first case it's just possible I shorted contacts on the rather accessible contact strip on the bottom, and in the second case I don't believe it had acquired all the satellites it would have liked.) Due to these issues I'd probably deduct 1/2 star from my rating if I could.

At this point I'm willing to give it try out on a much longer trip. (I'll pack the Mio as a backup.) When it works, it works well once you adapt to its quirks. The voice is clear and the pronunciation is acceptable. The routes it calculates are reasonable. The price is right given the screen size and feature set. The supplied power cable fits the base not the Nuvi itself, but you can charge it from the usb port as well. The cable locks into the base so you can't jiggle it loose accidentally. The suction cup on the base holds nice and firmly (I use it on a "bean bag" mount instead of the windshield - in this configuration the button that releases the Nuvi from the base is a little tricky to get at but not a big issue.)

To minimize external causes that might upset it, I recommend the following: Give it time to acquire satellites before trying to route somewhere. Avoid touching the contacts on the bottom when it is not in its base. Don't plug it in until you have started the vehicle - some starter systems will send a significant spike through the electrical system when cranking.

Finally, the free map update was reasonably painless from a Windows 7 64-bit system. It's a long download, but uneventful. I think Garmin could stand to streamline the process by a screen or two, but it works.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the 200 NUVI I had   July 25, 2010
Edward B. Mcgowan (Drexel Hill, PA United States)
Overall it's pretty good. Locked up on me a few times and takes a while to find the satellites but I like the speaking street names. Some of the routes it takes are longer than I would take but if you know where you're going you don't need the GPS anyway. I am happy with it and for the price it's pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars Good value for a voice recognition unit   July 24, 2010
2Tight
I finally got to use this for the first time traveling to the coast towing our trailer. It found satellites quickly, had plenty of warning time before turns, was easy to see, and the voice recognition worked perfect. My only complaint might be from my own unfamiliarity with the unit; it picked the shortest possible route with so many secondary roads rather than all good highways for towing. This resulted in the unit talking all the time and always trying to get me back onto the original 'calculated' route as I knew the best way there. Once I was past the preset 'shortcuts' all was good again. It did help me find a good seafood joint in Bodega Bay, CA. I have a lot to learn still but the unit is very intuitive to operate. The provided windshield suction cup mount worked great but I think I'll make up a sunshade for the screen to cut the glare. I'm pleased with this unit and have owned other GPS brands in the past.
