3 out of 5 stars Nice device, poor customer service   July 19, 2010
Keep Iru (NC USA)
Pros:
The routes and calculations are generally precise and accurate.
Compared to previous GPS units I have owned the rerouting is very fast.
The Live features are handy and well implemented, I particularly like the Google Local Search.
The touchscreen is accurate.
The Human Voices are a great novelty, I enjoy getting my instructions from Yoda.

Cons:
While the screen is readable in direct sunlight it does get a bit more washed out than other GPS units I have used.
TomTom's customer support leaves a lot to be desired. They are slow to respond to emails (a week so far with no reply in my most recent ticket) and phone support is hit or miss depending on who you talk to.

4 out of 5 stars 2nd one   July 15, 2010
Charlie James (Houston, Texas United States)
I'm a multiline factory rep and this is the best item since butter. When I'm in the field, all I have to do refer to my client map on another program and plug the address into TOM. It will get me there in the shortest and most cost saving way possible. If I have a little time on my hands, I can Google companies in that area for prospects.
CAUTION.....THIS IS A HOT THEFT PRODUCT...........I know... this is my 2nd. I had other choices to buy to but this was my choice. Be sure to add your name, address, phone number and put in a password. According to TOMTOM you may not get your device back but it will be useless to the thief. TOMTOM cannot and will not break a code without your registered e-mail and proof of purchase.
Sure no GPS is perfect and everyone is looking for better AND someone is always going to complain. I found what I wanted. I've had little problems with the GPS or its software and none with TOMTOM customer service.

1 out of 5 stars TomTom out of the box experience: Epic Fail.   July 15, 2010
Kenneth F. Krutsch (Minneapolis, MN USA)
I have been a fan of TomTom since their inception. I've owned four previous units and have used the RDS-TMC service with previous units (I travel a lot to different cities and the traffic updates are a real help).

I still own a Go 930 with the RDS-TMC traffic antenna. After the initial subscription expired, no one could figure out how to renew my subscription - even after I paid for it twice and even after 5 calls to technical support. Each call was a different path down the call center flow chart.

Out of frustration, I stupidly decided to purchase a new unit, thinking that the Live Services would be a nice upgrade from the RDS-TMC based service.

So, purchased a new Go 740TM Live with lifetime traffic and maps. In short, I had three problems:

1. The 'Live Services' worked for Google Search, so the wireless connection was fine, but the Traffic complained that I needed a subscription - right out of the box.

2. The RDS-TMC antenna is included with the unit - when I plugged it in, it immediately disconnected itself and reported that a subscription was required. Again, all of this is supposed to work right out of the box.

3. Tapping on the screen produces double-taps about 33% of the time. Yeah, try entering in your TomTom account password with that happening.

It's really too bad, because the navigation software from TomTom and the physical device is the highest quality of all of the units, in my opinion. But, clearly, something has happened at TomTom with respect to their software development team and feature licensing. One support person, Yolanda, told me that the traffic licensing server is broken and no one knows when it will be up and running.

5 out of 5 stars I had to upgrade because I couldn't find any tech support for my old TomTom XL One S   July 6, 2010

I'm not a techno-savy kind of guy. I learn just enough to get a product to do what I want and then don't want/need to go deeper. My old TomTom kept losing the satalite signals after a couple years and I couldn't find ANY support mechanism that could even answer questions....... so I simply gave up and bought a new one. Seems a shame but I guess that's the world we live in now.

1 out of 5 stars If you use an iPhone, you'll hate this product.   July 4, 2010

The biggest problem with this product is entering an address. The touchscreen is lousy: inaccurate to the touch or unresponsive. The voice to text essentially does not work at all. There isn't much more to write. Beyond this, it takes several minutes to locate your position. If entering a destination is so cumbersome, then don't plan on using this device on a regular basis.
