Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
The Toshiba 27" flat screen TV offers high-end features for a modest price. The 16:9 aspect ratio lets you view a variety of formats, up to, and including, Widescreen. The flat screen is enhanced with a comb filter, invar shadow mask and velocity scan modulation.

Audio features include 2, 5 watt speakers providing virtual surround with MTS stereo. A sound leveler and SAP (secondary audio programming) capability round out the package.

Parental control via the V-chip and a sleep timer add customization abilities, as does the optional Spanish interface.

A remote control, headphone jacks, and both rear and front connectors make it user friendly. And the bargain price makes it even more friendly.

Product Description
Toshiba 27AF45 FST Pure CRT Color TV - You've watched TV before but this is truly a new experience. Sit back, relax, let Toshiba lift you to a new dimension. We know that Toshiba provides excellent picture integrity but this model also has speakers mounted at the sides of the screen (double baffle design) for more realistic, stereo sound. This model also offers a particularly wonderful feature - StableSound. This feature maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal. So, when TV commercials come on, the blaring volume increase is stabilized for optimum sound comfort. Got children? Enjoy the versatility of V-Chip control 2 Rear A/V, 1 Rear S-Video, and 1 Front A/V input 1 ColorStream Component Video input / RF input / A/V output On-screen programmable menus in English/French/Spanish Captioning Favorite Channel & Channel Label modes Approximate Size - 23 High x 31 Wide x 20 Deep Unit Weight - 90 Pounds Illuminated Universal Remote Control NOTE - Prolonged use of the closed caption feature on any Direct View CRT Television may result in the picture effect commonly known as burn-in. Consumers who intend on using the closed caption feature (on a regular basis) on a television should consider purchasing an LCD or DLP Projection Television, neither of which are susceptible to the same effect

3 out of 5 stars A bit dated now, but...   December 8, 2009

I bought this TV about 4 or 5 years ago and just put it in my car to take to the recycle center. With the advent of LCD no one will be in the market for one of these, but maybe Toshiba is interested. The TV worked fine up until 2 weeks ago. I must say that it stayed on damn near 24/7 from June 2007 up until November of 2009. I was no longer working so the TV was my refuge. Anyway, one night I put on the sleep timer. The next morning I turned on the TV, nothing. Pushed all kinds of buttons, disconnected, reconnected, nothing. No power. It just died. I thought a life of only 4-5 years for a Toshiba was poor, but I guess 2 years of nonstop use was pushing it...

5 out of 5 stars looks great and has an excellent picture   June 21, 2009

What more can I say? Flat screen minimizes reflection. Have had this TV since January 2004 with no problems at all! Remote is well designed and stereo sound even has some bass to it.

2 out of 5 stars Luck of the Draw   January 20, 2009

I shlepped this thing home and upon plugging it in found that there were large purple splotches in the corners and center of the screen which get worse and the unit warms. I know this has to do with the alignment of the beam, maybe a magnet nearby, whatever, but dunno what to do with it. Called Toshiba and was told it is my own tough luck. So I've owned it for about 2 years now. he purple splotches are annoying, but otherwise its a nice TV. Reading through the reviews here I see that essentially buying them is a crapshoot. They're either really nice or real crap. And the likelihood of getting a lemon seems around 40% which isn't too good. Look, if you're looking for a TV, look for something you're less likely to have come out a piece of rubbish. Or better yet- just get a new HDTV. It's worth it, trust me.

1 out of 5 stars 27A45 Stopped working after only one year!   July 22, 2007

I purchased the Toshiba 27A45 about one year ago. I was happy with the picture and the sound, especially for the money. Plus, I thought that Toshiba was a reliable brand. After all, I had owned another Toshiba without problems for over 10 years!

I came home yesterday to find the TV would not turn on. I pushed the power button, and nothing! I then did a web search on this model to see if, by chance, there was a fuse or something that I could replace. I discovered that I was not the only person to have problems with this model. From what I gather, the TV has a manufactering defect which causes connections to come loose. Now, after just one year, I'm forced to by another TV. Guess which brand it *WON'T* be!
