Amazon.com Product Description
A perfect sonic and stylistic match for flat-panel and shallow-case TVs, the Polk Audio SurroundBar is designed to offer elegant, high-resolution, single-source surround sound. It comes with everything you need to mount it above, below, or even on your television, and it works with any surround sound receiver. It's an ideal listening system for anyone seeking rich, enveloping surround sound without the space commitment or hookup hassles of a multispeaker system.

The SurroundBar is designed to complete your high-definition TV experience and is a perfect match for flat-panel TVs. (Titanium color shown)

SDA technology projects sound to both sides and behind you.
Polk Audio's patented SDA Surround technology means there's no need to install rear speakers. SDA Surround technology is founded on extensive research into the way human ears process sound and perceive directionality of sound. Unlike speakers or surround algorithms that merely simulate surround effects, the SurroundBar reproduces discrete, multichannel surround sound using a patented combination of signal processing and acoustical geometry called Acoustic Wave Front Reconstruction (AWFR). Since the SurroundBar works directly upon your ears and requires no special room characteristics, it can deliver room-filling surround sound nearly anywhere.

As with conventional 5.1-channel systems, you'll hear the best surround effects when you're centered directly in front of the SurroundBar. However--unlike conventional 5.1 systems--the SurroundBar delivers surround sound regardless of how close or how far away you sit.

While it's technically a single speaker, the SurroundBar contains seven active drive units, three tweeters, and inputs for all five primary surround channels: front left/center/right and rear left/right. Multiple drive units spaced roughly the same distance apart as your ears allow the speaker to keep you from discerning the actual sound sources. Instead, it will seem as though sound is coming from all around and behind you.

Mount the SurroundBar below your flat-panel TV, or use the included cradle for a shelf or set-top placement. (Titanium color shown)
The SurroundBar's circuitry maintains proper isolation of all amplifier channels and will function correctly with any amplifier or receiver capable of driving a 4 ohm load (that is, capable of powering 4-ohm speakers). Many receivers are rated for maximum power into 8 ohms but function perfectly well--functioning with about half their rated power--into 4 ohms, too. Wiring a stand-alone powered subwoofer in line with the speaker (a procedure illustrated in the product manual) will heighten the sense of realism and visceral power of the SurroundBar.

For even more spacious sound, you can use the SurroundBar with your existing surround speakers, too. In such an arrangement you can wire the surround outputs from your receiver to your separate surround speakers instead of to the SurroundBar's rear-speaker terminals, using the SurroundBar for the front left, center, and right channels only.

Simplified color-coded hookup with five channels directly from the home theater receiver.
Better still, if you have a 6.1- or 7.1-channel receiver, use one of your surround speakers as the rear-center speaker in a 6.1 system, or both surround speakers as 2 of the 4 speakers in a 7.1 system (with the SurroundBar's 2 surround channels in filling in the sound for the other 2).

The SurroundBar must be mounted horizontally to function properly. Placement directly above or below your TV screen pointed in the same direction as the screen will give the best coordination between your surround sound and the on-screen images. Wall mounting, shelf mounting, table mounting, or stand mounting all work equally well. However, walls or other large obstacles within three feet of the sides of the SurroundBar will reduce the effectiveness of its surround delivery. Cross-corner locations will work just fine.

The supplied 25-foot, 10-conductor cable is color-coded and clearly marked for easy hookup.

What's in the Box
SurroundBar speaker, 2-piece wall bracket, a center-channel base, mounting screws, 25-foot wire bundle, and a quick-start guide.

5 out of 5 stars I Love Polk Audio   May 16, 2010
Gregory Hendricks (San Antonio, TX)
Just like Polk Audio's PSW10 Subwoofer (which I also purchased), this unit is SOLID and HEAVY. Polk gives you great quality products for the money. This thing is much more substantial than I expected. Comes with a consolidated, flattened cable for connecting to a 5.1 surround receiver. It also comes with the gear needed for wall mounting or sitting it atop a cabinet.

Sound quality with my Yamaha RX-V467 receiver is fantastic. I used the YAOP auto setup on the receiver to adjust the speakers, but I had to go back and set the speaker size to Large, which is what Polk recommends. Paired with the PSW10, the sound I get is great.

The surround effect is very good. It's a tradeoff. No, it's not true surround sound, but you do get some enveloping, high quality sound. The great thing is that there aren't speakers and wires all over the place. My wife is happy and I'm happy.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, I can stop researching!   May 9, 2010

First of all I want to thank all the folks that took the time to create reviews about the Polk Audio Surround bar system. My thoughts are relatively short and simply. I started with a Sony BDV-E500W upon unpacking and setting up had repacked and ship back to Amazon within 48 hours (it was awful). I then went with Vizio VSB200, which was a new concept for me to try (sound bar). The Vizio was ok, but no bass and the sound was bad at low volumes. I ended up going with the Polk Audio Surround bar and like all the reviews state, it was a very simple installation, the remote doesn't work, but I don't need the Polk remote since my TV remote controls the volume. I was sampling this system on the Blue Ray movie preview of the "The Last Air Bender" which provides very dynamic sounds. I was very impressed. I tried the demo on all 3 gain settings and opted for the 2nd setting, the unit sounds great at any volume. I put the sub next to my couch so I can reach down and adjust the sub volume when necessary. By the way, the sub rocks, my wife commented that she did not like the couch shaking so much (lol). On a final note. I originally started with a Klipsh tower (RF5) system power by a Pioneer Elite receiver. I sold the system on Craigslist and thought I could replace the sound with a theater in a box...yeah right. Anyways, the Polk system will do fine until I purchase my next high dollar system.

4 out of 5 stars Good - About what you'd expect   May 2, 2010
K. Goettsch (Chicago, IL)
I like this soundbar a lot, but it isn't quite as good as a true surround system. If you don't want extra wires, then this is the way to go. Perfect for living rooms w/ 50" plasmas.

3 out of 5 stars Sound Bar   April 15, 2010

Average sound, difficult set-up if you are attempting to connect 7.0 or 7.1 surround.
Pretty good buy for the price, but I would definitely compare with a center speaker if I had to do it again.

4 out of 5 stars Misprint in product description   April 2, 2010
Brice Remaley (Houston TX)
I'm writing this just to inform everyone about a misprint in the Amazon product description. In the text description, it states that the speaker is a 4 ohm speaker. Unfortunately, none (that I found) of todays AV receivers will drive a 4 ohm load. A few will drive 6 ohm speakers but none that I found (short of Sony ES line -- and I didn't want to spend that much) would handle a 4 ohm speaker impedance. One of the tech advisors at Crutchfield told me the Polk 42" soundbar they sold was 8 ohms. Confused, I called Polk today and they assured me that they never produced a 42" soundbar (or any soundbar for that matter) that was not 8 ohms.
Hope this helps out.
